ALDI Mobile Overseas Roaming Explained

Heading overseas with ALDI Mobile? Before you go, you'll need to add a roaming pack to your account. ALDI Mobile's overseas roaming packs are sold by region and cheap on paper — but the 7-day validity windows and data limits mean costs can stack up quickly on trips longer than a week.

How much will it cost?

ALDI Mobile sells five roaming packs, each tied to a region and valid for exactly 7 days.

Pack Price Data Destinations
Pacific Data Pack $5 1 GB Fiji, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Nauru
Asia Data Pack $8 1 GB 15 countries including Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, South Korea
North America Data Pack $5 2 GB USA, Canada, Mexico
Global Data Pack $15 2 GB 69 destinations
Global Travel Pack $30 5 GB + 30 min calls + 50 SMS 47 destinations

The 7-day clock starts the moment you purchase a pack — so buy it close to your departure date, not weeks in advance.

For anything longer than a week, you'll need more than one pack. A two-week trip to Japan on the Asia Data Pack means two packs at $8 each: $16 total for 2 GB of data — but most travellers use far more than that.

How much data will I get?

It depends on which pack you choose.

The Asia and Pacific Data Packs give you 1 GB for 7 days. The North America and Global Data Packs give you 2 GB for 7 days. There are no daily caps — you can use your data however you like until it runs out or the 7 days are up.

1 GB for seven days sounds reasonable on paper. In practice, it'll disappear faster than expected — usually somewhere between customs and your first bowl of ramen. Google Maps alone will get through a meaningful chunk of it. If you're relying on mobile data throughout the day, plan accordingly.

Can I make calls and send texts?

For the Asia, Pacific, North America, and Global Data Packs: no. These are data-only.

The exception is the Global Travel Pack ($30 for 7 days). It includes 30 minutes of calls and 50 SMS alongside 5 GB of data. It covers 47 destinations — fewer than the Global Data Pack — and the same 7-day window applies.

For the data-only packs, apps like WhatsApp, iMessage, and FaceTime will handle calls and messages over your data connection just fine.

How do I turn it on?

  1. Log in to your My ALDI Mobile account at aldimobile.com.au or via the My ALDI Mobile app.
  2. Go to account settings and enable international roaming on your account.
  3. Purchase your chosen roaming pack — buy it on the day you travel or the day before, not weeks ahead.
  4. Your pack activates immediately. No further setup required.

Alternatives

If you're already comfortable using apps for calls and messages — which ALDI Mobile's data-only packs require anyway — a travel eSIM is worth comparing. ALDI's Asia Data Pack tops out at 1 GB, so bigger trips mean stacking packs at $8 each. Pick the size you'd actually use for two weeks in Japan:

However much you need, a RoamMate Japan eSIM works out to around $2–$3 per gigabyte — ALDI's Asia packs cost $8. RoamMate eSIMs install on your phone before you fly, with no account portals or timing your purchase around departure, and your Australian number stays active on your regular SIM.
